Where it came from
Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts was originally released as a mythic rare creature in the 2013 Commander set, though the specific printing identified here belongs to the Commander 2015 reprint series. As a key figure in the Orzhov Syndicate within the Ravnica plane of Magic: The Gathering, Teysa Karlov represents the intersection of ghostly guidance and legislative power. The character was designed to reflect her role as the grand envoy of her guild, prioritizing defensive triggers and graveyard recursion as thematic mechanics.
The card illustration for this iteration was rendered by artist Johannes Voss, who is widely recognized for his ethereal and high-fantasy aesthetic. Voss aimed to capture Teysa's commanding presence and haunting authority, using light and shadow to emphasize her status as a bridge between the living and the spirit world. The card became a popular inclusion in white-black commander decks due to its ability to punish combat-oriented strategies while providing a consistent stream of flying tokens.
