Where it came from
The Bears of Littjara was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim, which debuted in early 2021. Designed to showcase the set's thematic focus on Norse mythology and the icy, rugged landscape of its namesake plane, the card was distributed through various promotional channels, including store events and localized card kits. It captures the essence of the Changeling creature type, which is central to the set's mechanical identity, allowing the card to represent any creature tribe in the game.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by illustrator Alayna Danner, who has a long-standing history of contributing atmospheric and ethereal landscapes to the game. Danner aimed to evoke the frozen, mystical beauty of the Littjara forests, emphasizing the shifting, camouflaged nature of the bears as they move through the snow. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatile utility in tribal decks and for Danner's striking, cold-toned painterly style, which helped define the visual language of the Kaldheim expansion.
