Where it came from
The Blackstaff of Waterdeep was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first time the game integrated the Dungeons & Dragons setting into its core product line. This specific card, numbered 48s, features the specialized borderless art treatment created for the set's promotional releases, intended to highlight iconic figures from D&D lore.
The card depicts Vajra Safahr, the current holder of the legendary Blackstaff title in the city of Waterdeep. The illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a dark, atmospheric style to capture the character's command over the sentient, artifact-imbued staff. Upon its release, the card was well-received by both Magic players for its utility in Commander format and D&D fans who appreciated the accurate representation of the character's storied legacy in the Forgotten Realms.
