Where it came from
The End was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in September 2023, serving as a focal point for the set's fairy-tale aesthetic. The card reflects the expansion's core theme of a storybook kingdom reimagined through a darker, more volatile lens, drawing heavily on folklore tropes where malevolent curses or powerful magic can permanently excise a threat from a narrative.
The illustrative work for this piece was crafted to emphasize the dramatic weight of its mechanical function, which removes a target card and prevents its return. By focusing on the visual motif of a story reaching its final, unavoidable conclusion, the art team aimed to capture the essence of a 'happily ever after' that has been subverted by the grim realities of the Eldraine wilderness.
