Where it came from
The Everflowing Well, released in late 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering, represents the set's exploration of subterranean, mythic landscapes. Mechanically designed as a transforming artifact, the card reflects the set's thematic focus on discovery and resource management within the hollow earth of Ixalan. It was crafted to provide players with long-term card advantage, mirroring the narrative of unearthing ancient, inexhaustible sources of power hidden beneath the surface.
The art, illustrated by artist Igor Kieryluk, utilizes a vibrant and mystical aesthetic to emphasize the surreal, cavernous environment of the plane. Kieryluk sought to capture the sense of scale and the magical glow inherent to the Well, distinguishing it from the set’s more terrestrial geological features. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the strategic community as a versatile utility piece, valued for its ability to transition from a stabilizing early-game draw engine into a potent late-game mana utility.
