Where it came from
The Gaffer was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Tales of Middle-earth' Commander set, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Middle-earth Enterprises. The card depicts Samwise Gamgee’s father, Hamfast, in his role as the gardener of Bag End, grounding the high-fantasy narrative in the domestic charm of the Shire. It was designed to function as a support engine for food-token strategies, mechanically representing the Gaffer’s role as a provider and caretaker within the Hobbit hierarchy.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, who utilized a warm, earthy color palette to evoke the pastoral atmosphere of the Shire. The artwork focuses on the character’s weathered features and modest surroundings, aiming for a nostalgic, storybook aesthetic. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for both its thematic adherence to J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and its utility in synergistic deck-building, quickly becoming a staple for commanders focused on life gain and resource generation.
