What it does

When you planeswalk to The Great Aerie and at the beginning of your upkeep, bolster 3. (Choose a creature with the least toughness among creatures you control and put three +1/+1 counters on it.)

Whenever chaos ensues, choose up to one target creature you control and up to one target creature an opponent controls. Each of those creatures deals damage equal to its toughness to the other.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Great Aerie was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set, a collection of supplemental decks designed for the Magic: The Gathering multiplayer format. This specific card serves as an enchantment that encourages a go-wide strategy by placing counters on creatures whenever they enter the battlefield, reflecting the set's narrative theme of various planes across the Multiverse uniting to defend against a Phyrexian invasion.

The card’s illustration was handled by artist Helge C. Balzer, who utilized the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the game to depict an expansive, elevated sanctuary. The design is intended to reward players for building creature-heavy decks, fitting into the green-white color identity that often emphasizes synergistic growth. Upon its release, it was well-received by Commander players for its utility in token-based strategies, finding a consistent place in decks focused on board state expansion.
