Where it came from
The Great Henge was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set, a Magic: The Gathering expansion heavily inspired by Arthurian legend and classic fairy tales. This specific version, identified by the collector number 161s, is a promotional variant featuring a unique borderless aesthetic that highlights the intricate, verdant art of the card. It was designed to function as a powerful engine for green-aligned decks, reflecting the 'henge' concept as a sacred place of nature and regeneration within the game's lore.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by illustrator Adam Paquette, who aimed to capture the ethereal, ancient majesty of the Eldraine wilderness. The design received significant attention from the player community upon release, not only for its distinct visual identity but also for its high mechanical power level, which quickly made it a staple in various competitive formats. Its inclusion in the promo series solidified its status as a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for players and collectors alike.
