Where it came from
The Princess Takes Flight was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a narrative beat within the set's fairy-tale-inspired lore, specifically depicting a moment where a character escapes a restrictive environment to seek their own destiny. It functions mechanically as a saga enchantment, a card type designed to tell a multi-stage story through sequential effects that trigger over successive turns.
The illustration was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, whose work often leans into the expressive, illustrative styles prevalent in modern fantasy gaming. The design captures a blend of wonder and action, aligning with the set's overarching aesthetic of high-fantasy storybook motifs. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its thematic resonance with the set's focus on classic fables reimagined through the lens of the plane of Eldraine.
