Where it came from
The Wanderer (37s) was released as part of the War of the Spark promo set in 2019, specifically appearing as a promotional version of a planeswalker card. This iteration of the character was introduced during a critical juncture in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse storyline, where the character Nicol Bolas orchestrated a massive invasion of the plane of Ravnica, forcing disparate factions to unite against a common threat. The card was distributed primarily through promotional events, serving as a collectible variant that highlighted the character's mysterious, masked aesthetic.
The art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who captured the character's enigmatic and ethereal nature through a high-contrast style that emphasizes her signature glowing blades and flowing robes. Voss aimed to evoke a sense of controlled, quiet intensity, distinguishing the Wanderer from the more overtly aggressive figures in the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors alike, with many praising the clean, minimalist composition that allowed the character's unique visual design to stand out within the busy, high-energy context of the War of the Spark expansion.
