What it does

Whenever one or more other permanents phase out and whenever one or more other cards are put into exile from anywhere, put a time counter on The War Doctor.

Whenever The War Doctor attacks, it deals damage equal to the number of time counters on it to any target. If a creature dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead.

Provenance

Where it came from

The War Doctor card, numbered 772 in the Doctor Who trading card series, commemorates the incarnation played by Sir John Hurt, who was introduced to the franchise during the fiftieth-anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, in 2013. This iteration of the Time Lord was created to fill the narrative gap between the Eighth and Ninth Doctors, representing a version of the character who renounced the title of Doctor to fight in the Time War. The card was designed to integrate this retconned figure into the broader established history of the series.

The visual design of the card utilizes promotional photography captured during the 2013 production, emphasizing the character's gritty, battle-worn aesthetic which departed from the typically eccentric attire of previous incarnations. It was released as part of an expansive collection aimed at cataloging every major character across the show's fifty-year history. Reception among fans was generally positive, as it provided physical representation for a highly anticipated addition to the series' lore that had remained a point of intrigue for years.
