The Warmonger

The Warmonger is a Hero card released as part of the Born of the Gods Hero's Path, a promotional campaign designed to immerse players in the Greek mythology-inspired Theros block of Magic: The Gathering. Distributed through local game stores during the set's release events in 2014, these oversized cards were intended to be used in specific challenge games, allowing players to represent a hero embarking on a journey to attain divine favor.

The card's design features distinct artwork and a unique mechanical frame meant to evoke the epic scale of its mythological inspiration. It was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a dramatic, dark aesthetic to capture the aggressive, battle-hardened nature of a Warmonger. Upon its debut, the card was received as a novel way to incentivize store play and community engagement, serving as a memorable collectible for those participating in the organized play cycle of the era.
