Where it came from
The Watcher in the Water was released as part of the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. This set marked the first major integration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the game’s Universes Beyond series, aiming to blend classic fantasy archetypes with the established mechanics of the tabletop trading card game. The creature represents the tentacled monstrosity that guards the Doors of Durin, reflecting the card's function as a control-oriented threat that triggers when opponents cast spells.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from Chris Cold, a digital artist known for his atmospheric and often dark fantasy illustrations. Cold’s design focuses on the claustrophobic and menacing nature of the creature emerging from the black waters outside Moria. The composition emphasizes the scale and alien nature of the beast, capturing a sense of dread consistent with the source material's depiction of the encounter, and the card was generally well-received by players for its thematic accuracy and distinct aesthetic.
