The Wise Mothman

The Wise Mothman card was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Fallout Commander set, which brought the post-apocalyptic role-playing franchise into the tabletop trading card format. The set was designed to capture the distinct retro-futuristic aesthetic of the games, utilizing art styles that evoke the mid-century optimism and decay inherent to the Fallout universe. This specific card represents the cryptid of the same name, a prominent figure in the lore of West Virginia as portrayed in Fallout 76.

The illustration for this card emphasizes the mystical and atmospheric qualities of the Mothman, often depicted with its signature glowing red eyes to capture its unsettling yet reverent nature within the game's cultist factions. The card was crafted by Wizards of the Coast to function as a centerpiece for decks centered around graveyard recursion and +1/+1 counters, reflecting the character’s association with radiation and mutations in the source material. It was generally well-received by players for its thematic integration of Fallout mechanics into the established rules of the card game.
