Where it came from
The World Spell was released as part of the Dominaria United set in 2022, serving as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to evoke the high-fantasy aesthetic of Dominaria, one of the game's most iconic and storied planes, reflecting the set's focus on historical conflict and the defense of the realm against Phyrexian invaders. The mechanics of the card center on the concept of 'Enlist' and the casting of legendary permanents, mirroring the set's thematic emphasis on gathering heroes to turn the tide of war.
The artwork for this particular printing was commissioned to capture the monumental scale of magical influence over the landscape, utilizing a dramatic, sweeping composition characteristic of contemporary Magic art. Illustrators for the Dominaria United promotional cycle were tasked with emphasizing the epic scope of the setting to resonate with long-time players who have followed the lore for decades. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile tool for Commander and casual play, noted for its utility in quickly populating the battlefield with powerful legendary creatures.
