Where it came from
The Wretched was released in 1995 as part of the Chronicles expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Chronicles was a controversial set designed to reprint popular cards from earlier expansions, such as Legends and The Dark, to increase their availability for a rapidly expanding player base. It served as a landmark moment in the history of the game, highlighting the tension between the secondary market value of rare cards and the desire for accessibility among newer players.
The card features illustration by Anson Maddocks, a prolific artist during the formative years of the game known for his distinctive, often macabre creature designs. The Wretched embodies the gothic aesthetic prevalent in early Magic sets, intended to represent a malevolent, parasitic entity. While the card is not considered a competitive staple, it remains a nostalgic piece for those who collected during the mid-nineties transition period when the game first transitioned into mass-market retail channels.
