Where it came from
The Zephyr Maze was released in 2012 as part of the Planechase 2012 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a unique format where players travel between different planes of existence, each represented by a large-format oversized card. The Zephyr Maze represents the plane of Segovia, a world known in lore for its incredibly small scale, where even the smallest creatures appear as giants relative to the local inhabitants.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Yeong-Hao Han, who sought to capture the dizzying, architectural complexity of Segovia’s miniature landscape. The design focuses on the sense of being trapped within a labyrinthine environment, reinforcing the card’s mechanical function of manipulating movement across the battlefield. It remains a notable piece of the 2012 set, appreciated by players for its thematic integration of the game's planar travel mechanics.
