Where it came from
Thief of Existence was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a high-mana value removal spell, the card was intended to provide flexibility in competitive play by allowing players to exile a nonland permanent for a cost that fluctuates based on the target. It reflects the set's design philosophy of introducing powerful, complex interactions specifically balanced for the Modern format.
The promotional variant, identified by collector number 174s, features distinct borderless art that highlights the ethereal, parasitic nature of the card's namesake creature. As with many Modern Horizons 3 offerings, this illustration was commissioned to appeal to collectors seeking premium aesthetics, moving away from traditional frame limitations to provide a more immersive visual experience for players.
