What it does

At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, you manifest the top card of that player's library. (Put it onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it's a creature card.)

Whenever a creature you control but don't own dies, its owner loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.

Provenance

Where it came from

Thieving Amalgam was introduced in the 2024 Magic: The Gathering set Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander. The set was designed to explore a Western-themed plane, blending traditional fantasy elements with tropes from cowboy cinema and outlaw narratives. As part of the Commander expansion, the card was specifically crafted to support multiplayer formats, focusing on mechanics that allow players to manifest and manipulate cards from the top of opponents' libraries.

The card was illustrated by Johan Grenier, a prominent fantasy artist known for his detailed, atmospheric character work. Grenier's design for Thieving Amalgam leans into the set's aesthetic of a chaotic, magi-tech frontier, depicting an unsettling creature that reflects the card's function of pilfering resources from rivals. Upon its release, the card gained attention in the Commander community for its utility in graveyard-focused decks and its ability to turn the contents of an opponent's deck against them.
