Thorn Thallid

Thorn Thallid was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on the ecological and societal collapse of the fictional continent of Sarpadia, exploring themes of war, scarcity, and desperate magical experimentation. The Thallids were depicted as a fungal race created by the order of Thallid wizards to provide food for their declining population, only for the creatures to eventually consume their creators.

The artwork for this specific iteration was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, a foundational artist for the game during its early years. Maddocks utilized a distinct, surreal, and often grotesque style that became synonymous with the dark, organic horror aesthetic of the early Magic sets. The design aimed to convey the plant-like, parasitic nature of the creature, and while Fallen Empires initially faced criticism for its perceived power level, the atmospheric world-building and character designs have since earned it a dedicated place in the history of the game.
