What it does

Imprint — When this artifact enters, you may have target player reveal their hand. If you do, choose a nonland card from it and exile that card.

Whenever a player casts a spell that shares a color or mana value with the exiled card, this artifact deals 2 damage to that player.

Provenance

Where it came from

Thought Prison was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, the first set in a block centered on a metallic, artifact-driven world. The card reflects the set's mechanical focus on artifacts and the 'imprint' keyword, which allows players to exile cards from their hand to influence the behavior of the artifact currently on the battlefield.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work contributed to the industrial and stark aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane. Staples was tasked with visualizing the oppressive, metallic nature of the setting, resulting in a design that emphasizes the cold, structural feeling of a prison built from the world's pervasive scrap metal.
