Thran Quarry

Thran Quarry was originally released as part of the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, but the specific copy identified as collector number 1 for the Junior Super Series was distributed as a promotional reward. These cards were awarded to young players participating in Wizards of the Coast's Junior Super Series, a competitive circuit designed to foster growth and sportsmanship among youth players in the Magic: The Gathering community during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist known for his detailed and atmospheric approach to Magic card art. In this piece, Giancola captured the desolate, industrial ruin of a Thran site, reflecting the card's lore significance as an ancient, depleted resource. The design was intended to evoke a sense of historical gravitas, and the card's unique mechanical identity—providing mana of any color at the cost of sacrificing itself if no creatures are present—remains a notable example of high-risk, high-reward resource management in the game's history.
