Where it came from
Three Steps Ahead is a blue instant spell released in the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The set draws heavy inspiration from Western tropes and outlaw folklore, reimagining the game's multiverse through a frontier lens. As a core part of this set's mechanical identity, the card features the 'spree' keyword, which allows players to choose one or more modes, reflecting the strategic planning and versatility associated with a clever outlaw plotting a heist.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Dominik Mayer, whose signature style utilizes sharp, angular forms and high-contrast lighting to convey a sense of kinetic energy and high-stakes tension. Mayer’s design was intended to visualize the act of outmaneuvering an opponent, depicting a character calculating multiple future possibilities. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and flexible utility in various formats, becoming a staple tool for blue-aligned decks.
