Where it came from
Thrilling Encore was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine Commander set, a collection of supplemental cards designed for the multiplayer Commander format. The card draws heavily from the set's fairy-tale aesthetic, reflecting the gothic and whimsical tone of the Eldraine plane, which blends Arthurian legend with classic folklore themes. Its mechanics focus on themes of resurrection and dramatic returns, fitting the set's narrative of high-stakes magical conflicts.
The card was illustrated by David Auden Nash, whose work for the set captures a sense of theatrical movement and magical intensity. The design team created Thrilling Encore to serve as a high-impact, late-game board wipe recovery tool, intended to reward players for navigating complex interactions. Upon release, it was noted by the Magic: The Gathering community for its efficiency in black-aligned decks, quickly establishing itself as a popular utility card for decks focused on graveyard recursion.
