Where it came from
Throne of Makindi was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising set, specifically featured as a showcase-frame promo card. The card represents the expansive, adventure-themed world of Zendikar, a plane defined by its treacherous terrain and ancient, floating ruins. This particular card was designed to highlight the Zendikar Rising expansion's focus on the Kor civilization and their intricate, gravity-defying architecture.
The card features artwork by Sam Burley, who was tasked with emphasizing the ethereal and structural beauty of Makindi. The showcase frame treatment was introduced during this set to provide a stylized, artistic alternative to the traditional card border, aiming to evoke the feel of ancient relics or lithographs found within the plane. It was received by the player base as a visually distinct collector's item that leaned heavily into the set's high-fantasy, expeditionary aesthetic.
