Provenance

Where it came from

Thunder-Thrash Elder was first released as part of the Planechase 2012 product line, a multiplayer expansion for Magic: The Gathering that introduced the planar deck mechanic. The card was later reprinted in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a comprehensive box set designed to consolidate the various planar decks and cards released since the original 2009 set. It was created to facilitate the 'Devour' mechanic, rewarding players for sacrificing smaller creatures to empower the Elder.

The artwork for the card was provided by Dave Allsop, who captured the creature's aggressive, reptilian aesthetic within the context of the Jund shard of Alara. The design process focused on reflecting the harsh, survival-of-the-fittest environment of that plane, utilizing warm, visceral colors to emphasize the creature's role as a apex predator. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility card within aggressive tribal decks, specifically those prioritizing the synergy between sacrifice outlets and combat damage.
