Where it came from
Thunderherd Migration was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the exploration of a Mesoamerican-inspired plane filled with warring factions, prominently featuring dinosaurs as a mechanical theme for the green-aligned Sun Empire. This card was designed as a thematic staple for dinosaur tribal decks, providing a necessary ramp mechanic that reflected the migratory nature of the creatures inhabiting the region.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted a vast, thundering herd traversing the Ixalan landscape. Kieryluk sought to capture the sheer scale and momentum of the dinosaurs, utilizing warm, earthy tones to ground the fantastical beasts in the plane’s lush jungle environment. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited and Commander formats, becoming a reliable utility card for strategies centered around large creatures.
