Where it came from
Thundering Spineback was released in 2020 as part of the Jumpstart set, a unique expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed to make the game more accessible through a pick-up-and-play format. Each Jumpstart pack follows a specific theme, with this card appearing in the Dinosaur-themed deck. The design team created this card to function as a quintessential top-end creature for the Green color identity, focusing on the tribal synergy that defined the dinosaur archetype in previous sets like Ixalan.
The artwork was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose style typically emphasizes the raw, primal energy of the creatures he depicts. His work on the Thundering Spineback highlights the creature's immense scale and defensive capabilities, intended to provide players with a reliable, repeatable engine for creating creature tokens. Within the community, the card is recognized as a solid, if conventional, inclusion for limited play, valued more for its utility in maintaining board presence than for its complexity.
