Tidehollow Sculler first appeared in the 2008 Shards of Alara set as a representative of the Esper shard, a faction defined by its integration of ether and artifact-based life. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering R&D team, the creature was intended to provide a powerful tempo play for white-black decks by temporarily stripping a card from an opponent's hand. Its unique mechanic, which exiles a card until the Sculler leaves the battlefield, became a staple of interaction in eternal formats, balancing strategic risk with immediate board presence.

The Time Spiral Remastered version, released in 2021, features a striking aesthetic update that reflects the set's focus on curating iconic cards from across Magic's history.
