Time Ebb

Time Ebb was released in 1997 as part of the Portal expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to serve as an introductory experience for new players, featuring a simplified rule set and mechanics that avoided the complexities of the established game at the time. As a blue sorcery card, it allowed players to put a target creature on top of its owner's library, reflecting the set's focus on teaching fundamental board interaction and tempo control.

The card’s visual identity was defined by the artwork of Susan Van Camp, a prolific contributor to the game’s early aesthetic. Her work on Time Ebb utilizes the softer, illustrative style common to the Portal era, which prioritized clarity and thematic accessibility over the gritty or abstract fantasy tropes found in other sets. While Portal was initially received with mixed reactions by tournament veterans due to its stripped-down gameplay, cards like Time Ebb remain significant markers of Wizards of the Coast's efforts to expand the player base in the late nineties.
