Timeless Dragon // Timeless Dragon

The Timeless Dragon art card is part of the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a promotional collection released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 to celebrate the intersection of high fantasy illustration and Magic: The Gathering gameplay. These cards were distributed within collector boosters, designed specifically to showcase the sprawling, atmospheric world-building that defines the Modern Horizons sets. This particular piece features the work of artist Donato Giancola, whose approach leans into traditional oil painting techniques to evoke a sense of ancient, lingering power.

Giancola’s design captures the Timeless Dragon as a figure of existential weight, utilizing soft lighting and intricate scales to distinguish the creature from typical high-octane fantasy monsters. By omitting the card’s gameplay text, the series allows the viewer to focus entirely on the painterly brushstrokes and composition. The Art Series cards have been well-received by collectors who value the game’s aesthetic evolution, often functioning as standalone prints that highlight the shift toward more artistic, gallery-style representations in modern trading card design.
