Where it came from
Timeless Witness was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a direct-to-Modern-format product, the set was intended to introduce powerful cards that bypass Standard rotation, and this specific card serves as a modern iteration of the classic Eternal Witness. It utilizes the set's 'Eternal' mechanic, allowing it to be cast from the graveyard for its embalm cost, providing players with recursive utility.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who focused on ethereal and decaying visual elements to emphasize the card's theme of memory and time. The illustration draws from the set’s broader aesthetic of revisiting old mechanics through updated, high-power designs. Upon release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its versatility in midrange and graveyard-focused strategies.
