Where it came from
The Tomakul Honor Guard was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Brothers' War. This set revisited one of the most pivotal narratives in the game's history, focusing on the conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra and the industrial warfare that defined their era. As a common-rarity creature card, it was designed to populate the limited-play environment of the set, representing the foot soldiers utilized by the forces of the Brother's War era.
The art was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who aimed to capture the grounded, mechanized aesthetic of the set's retro-futuristic theme. The design emphasizes the rigid, functional armor of the Tomakul soldiers, reflecting the harsh conditions of the battlefield depicted in the card's background. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility piece within the set's specific drafting mechanics, serving as a reliable choice for players building decks focused on white-aligned artifact synergy.
