Where it came from
Torch Courier was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed as a foundational set to facilitate quick, accessible gameplay, Jumpstart 2022 introduced unique, thematic deck themes that players could combine without traditional deck-building requirements. The card serves as a thematic component of the 'Dash' deck theme, which emphasizes speed and aggressive, temporary creature deployments.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a vibrant and kinetic style to capture the essence of a creature sprinting with a flame. In the context of the game's mechanics, the card is designed as a low-cost utility unit that highlights the Red color identity's penchant for haste and direct movement. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, niche inclusion within the set, appreciated by collectors for its distinct visual aesthetic and its specific utility in limited-format play environments.
