Provenance

Where it came from

Tower of Calamities was originally released in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering expansion Scars of Mirrodin. Designed as an artifact with an activated ability that mimics a damage-dealing spell, it reflects the industrial, metallic aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane, where artifacts were central to both the flavor and the mechanics of the game. It was conceived during a period when the set's design team focused heavily on synergy between artifact-based cards and the return of the proliferate mechanic.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Franz Vohwinkel, who captured the imposing, heavy geometry of the tower itself. Following its initial printing, the card was later included in 'The List,' a curated selection of cards from Magic's history that appear in Set Boosters. Its inclusion in this format serves as a way to reintroduce players to thematic staples from past expansions, maintaining the card's presence in the game’s ever-evolving secondary and casual market environments.
