Where it came from
Toxin Sliver was released in 2003 as part of the Legions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Legions was unique for being composed entirely of creature cards, a design choice intended to capitalize on the tribal themes introduced in the preceding Onslaught block. Toxin Sliver specifically represents the Sliver creature type, a parasitic hive-mind race known for sharing their physiological mutations with all other Slivers on the battlefield.
The artwork for Toxin Sliver was rendered by illustrator Ron Spencer, whose visceral, textured style was a staple of the era. Spencer leaned into the alien, insectoid anatomy of the Slivers, depicting the creature with a menacing, crystalline aesthetic that emphasized its lethal, poisonous nature.
