What it does

When this enchantment enters, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with "2 generic mana, tap, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")

Whenever you sacrifice a Food, you may pay 1 generic mana. If you do, look at the top two cards of your library. You may reveal a permanent card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

Provenance

Where it came from

Trail of Crumbs was originally released as a rare enchantment in the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019. It was designed to support a food-focused archetype within the set, drawing heavy thematic inspiration from classic European fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel. The card mechanics allow players to generate card advantage whenever a food token is sacrificed, effectively turning food resources into a engine for finding additional cards.

The Foundations Jumpstart version, numbered 732, maintains the original illustration by Anna Steinbauer. Steinbauer’s work for the game is noted for its evocative, painterly style, and here she depicts the ominous bread-crumb trail winding through a dark forest. Upon its debut, the card was widely praised by the competitive community for its efficiency in grindy, midrange deck strategies, particularly in the Standard and Pioneer formats.
