Where it came from
Trait Doctoring was released in 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card featuring the 'fuse' mechanic, it was designed to allow players to cast one or both halves of a split card, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the ten guilds of Ravnica working together. It was conceptualized during a period of complex mechanical exploration for the game, aiming to provide utility through color manipulation.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Dave Kendall, who utilized a dark, atmospheric style to capture the manipulative nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card received a lukewarm reception from the competitive community, as its niche effect—changing color words on spells or permanents—was often viewed as too situational for high-level constructed play, though it remains a curious piece of the game's broader mechanical history.
