Tranquil Thicket

Tranquil Thicket was originally released in the 2002 Urza's Saga expansion as part of a cycle of cycling lands, designed to provide players with late-game utility by allowing them to exchange land cards for new draws. The card was later reprinted in Modern Horizons in 2019, a set specifically curated to introduce cards into the Modern format that had not previously been legal there. This version features new artwork by Rebecca Guay, an illustrator whose ethereal and painterly style has become highly sought after within the community.

The design of the card remains a staple in graveyard-reliant and land-focused archetypes due to its low mana cost and the inherent flexibility of the cycling mechanic. By including the card in Modern Horizons, Wizards of the Coast sought to bolster specific deck strategies that require efficient mana fixing and deck thinning. Guay’s illustration for this iteration depicts a serene, overgrown woodland scene, aligning with the card's theme of tranquil natural expansion and garnering significant positive reception for its distinct departure from the more aggressive aesthetic of standard creature cards.
