Where it came from
Trynn, Champion of Freedom was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 expansion, a set specifically designed to integrate the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths block with the popular multiplayer Commander format. The character was introduced to provide a Human-tribal commander option, featuring a mechanical focus on creating tokens to pressure opponents. This card represents a shift in design philosophy for the set, emphasizing synergistic, board-wide strategies common in the Mardu color identity.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Her design for Trynn captures a stoic, commanding presence, aligning with the character's thematic role as a leader of Human survivors. The reception among players was generally positive, with many praising the artwork's clarity and the card's functional design as an aggressive, go-wide commander that rewards players for maintaining a presence on the battlefield.
