Provenance

Where it came from

The Two-Headed Giant of Foriys was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering. As one of the original creatures in the game, it was designed to establish the fantasy flavor of the early Multiverse, specifically drawing from the lore of the Dominaria setting where such creatures were said to inhabit the plains of Foriys. The card was created during the nascent stages of Richard Garfield's design process, intended to provide a mid-range creature that utilized the game's early rules for combat and interaction.

The illustration was provided by artist Dan Frazier, whose distinctive, painterly style defined many of the iconic cards from the game's earliest sets. Frazier's work on the piece focused on conveying the brutish nature of the creature while maintaining the classic, somewhat mysterious aesthetic that characterized the Limited Edition era. Upon its release, the card became a staple of early casual play, serving as a memorable representation of the game's creature-heavy design philosophy during the formative years of collectible card gaming.
