Tyranid

The Tyranid token, numbered 17 in the Warhammer 40,000 Tokens set, was produced as a functional game accessory for the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond collaboration. These tokens were designed to represent the specialized creature units summoned by Tyranid decks during gameplay. They draw heavily from the established visual language of the Tyranid faction in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, emphasizing the bio-mechanical, insectoid aesthetic that defines the species in tabletop miniature gaming.

The illustrations for this set were commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to translate iconic Warhammer art styles into the MTG card format. The design prioritizes clarity and thematic consistency, ensuring that the token remains visually distinct from the primary deck cards while honoring the brutalist, extraterrestrial horror style created by Games Workshop. Upon release, the tokens were well-received by players for bridging the gap between the two game systems, effectively capturing the swarm-like nature of the faction.
