Tyrannize

Tyrannize was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore a world of eternal twilight and folklore-inspired horror, following the lighter themes of the preceding Lorwyn block. Mechanically, the card was designed to capitalize on the expansion's focus on color-hybrid mana, allowing players to cast it using either red or black mana, which offered flexibility in various deck-building strategies during the high-fantasy era of the game.

The card's illustration was created by artist Dave Allsop, who contributed significantly to the dark, gothic aesthetic prevalent throughout the Shadowmoor set. His work on this piece was intended to capture the visceral and oppressive nature of the card's effect, which forces opponents to discard cards or sacrifice permanents.
