Lore

Why it matters

As a rare piece from the Champions of Kamigawa set, this card serves as a disruptive force on the table by forcing players to exile their draws and play from that temporary space instead of their hands. It fundamentally alters the pace of the game by creating a "use it or lose it" dynamic, making it a distinct tactical challenge for anyone trying to manage their resources efficiently.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Uba Mask was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa set for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing heavy inspiration from Japanese mythology and folklore, the expansion sought to immerse players in a Shinto-influenced world of spirits and mortals. The artifact card reflects the set's focus on unconventional, rule-altering mechanics that prioritize tactical disruption over brute force.

The card's illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work is characterized by a distinctive, painterly approach to the game's high-fantasy aesthetic. In designing the Uba Mask, Hudson captured a haunting, ceremonial appearance that fits the eerie tone of the Kamigawa plane. Upon release, the card gained recognition among competitive players for its unique ability to exile drawn cards, effectively creating a volatile state of play that forces opponents to utilize their resources immediately or lose them forever.
