Uglúk of the White Hand // Uglúk of the White Hand

Uglúk of the White Hand, featured in the Tales of Middle-earth Art Series, was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering crossover with J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. These cards were designed to highlight the illustrative work commissioned for the set, presenting individual pieces of art without the standard game frames or text boxes that usually define playing cards. The series serves as a dedicated showcase for the visual interpretations of Middle-earth inhabitants, focusing on the dark, grimy aesthetic established for Saruman’s Uruk-hai.

The illustration itself captures the brutalist, industrial nature of the White Hand’s forces, emphasizing the rugged armor and menacing presence of Uglúk. Artists for this set were tasked with translating Tolkien’s descriptions into a contemporary fantasy style that honored the dense history of Middle-earth while fitting the established artistic direction of Wizards of the Coast. The card was received by collectors as a distinct, artistic collectible intended primarily for display rather than competitive play.
