Provenance

Where it came from

Uktabi Kong was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged set, Wizards of the Coast's second silver-bordered joke expansion designed for casual, humor-focused play. The card is a direct callback to the 1997 Mirage card Uktabi Orangutan, which featured two apes in a suggestive pose that became a long-running inside joke within the Magic: The Gathering community. By depicting a 'family' of gorillas, the card playfully escalates the original visual gag to a new generation of primates.

The card was illustrated by Una Fricker, who leaned into the comedic nature of the prompt by creating a cluttered, chaotic scene that mimics the composition of the original artwork while adding the offspring implied by the joke. Within the context of the game, the card's mechanics were designed to interact with its predecessor, rewarding players for having the original Uktabi Orangutan on the battlefield. It remains a hallmark of the set's dedication to meta-humor and fan service.
