Ulvenwald Hydra

Ulvenwald Hydra first appeared in the Shadows over Innistrad set in 2016, designed by Wizards of the Coast to emphasize the gothic horror and wilderness themes of the Innistrad plane. The creature reflects the set's focus on heavy mana investment and long-term battlefield presence, featuring a unique 'X' mana cost mechanic that allows it to scale in power as the game progresses. Its ability to search for lands provides players with a tactical advantage, tying the card's mechanics to the exploration of the overgrown, mystical forests of the Ulvenwald.

The Jumpstart version, featuring collector number 439, was released in 2020 as part of an innovative product line designed to make Magic: The Gathering more accessible to new players. By including popular cards from throughout the game's history in thematic, ready-to-play packs, Wizards of the Coast sought to streamline deck-building while maintaining the card's original aesthetic and mechanical identity. The illustration, consistent with its debut, highlights the hydra as a formidable, multi-headed protector of the woods, consistent with the high-fantasy artistry central to the game's visual storytelling.
