Where it came from
Umezawa's Jitte was originally released in the 2005 Magic: The Gathering expansion Betrayers of Kamigawa. Drawing inspiration from Japanese folklore and the aesthetic of the Kamigawa plane, the card was designed to represent a weapon used by the character Toshiro Umezawa. Mechanically, it was created as a powerful equipment card that rewards aggressive gameplay, eventually becoming a defining card in multiple competitive formats due to its versatility and efficiency.
The From the Vault: Lore version, released in 2016, features new artwork by artist Johannes Voss. As part of a premium collector's set designed to highlight significant narrative pieces in Magic history, this edition utilized a unique foil treatment and updated illustration to contrast with the original 2005 printing. It was received by the player base as a commemorative tribute to the card's enduring legacy as one of the most impactful artifacts in the game's history.
