Where it came from
Undead Warchief was originally printed in the Scourge set in 2003, designed to bolster tribal synergies for the Zombie creature type. Its re-release in the 2006 Time Spiral Timeshifted series served as a nod to Magic: The Gathering’s history, featuring the iconic purple expansion symbol and a nostalgic frame that appealed to long-term players. This card remains a staple in graveyard-focused decks due to its dual ability to reduce the casting cost of Zombies and provide a powerful global stat boost.
The artwork for the card was created by Greg Staples, who focused on a visceral, decaying aesthetic that defines the dark fantasy tone of the Scourge block. By depicting the Warchief as a commanding, rotted figure leading a legion, Staples emphasized the card's function as a tribal lord. Upon its inclusion in the Timeshifted subset, it was widely praised by the community for maintaining its mechanical relevance while celebrating the aesthetic evolution of the game's creature designs.
