Where it came from
Undercity Scrounger was released in early 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a return to the plane of Kamigawa, reimagining it through a futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic that blended traditional Japanese themes with advanced technology. The card was designed to function within the set’s mechanics, which focused on artifacts, enchantment synergies, and graveyard manipulation, reflecting the gritty, neon-lit urban environment of the fictional Towashi city.
The card was illustrated by Yongjae Choi, who utilized a sleek digital style to capture the scavenging, utilitarian nature of the character. As an uncommon creature, the Undercity Scrounger was crafted to provide strategic utility in the Limited format, allowing players to exchange resources through its artifact-related ability. Upon release, the card was generally well-received by players for its flavor-rich contribution to the set's immersive world-building and its reliable performance in deck archetypes centered on recursive artifact play.
